How many hours do you need for the Canadian Experience Class?
Last checked against IRCC: October 8, 2026
Short answer
IRCC asks for at least 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience, defined as 1,560 hours in total, in the 3 years before you apply.
How hours count
Only up to 30 hours per week count; 30 hours a week for 12 months equals 1,560. Hours above 30 in a week don't count, so longer weeks don't get you there faster. You can combine jobs, up to 30 hours a week in total.
Which jobs count
- TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 under the NOC
- paid (wages or commission)
- in Canada while authorized to work under temporary resident status
- you performed the NOC lead statement and most main duties.
Doesn't count
- work while studying full-time (including co-op terms)
- self-employment (IRCC lists a limited exception for some physicians)
- volunteer work and unpaid internships
- unauthorized work.
Hours are only one requirement
you also need approved language test results meeting the minimum in reading, writing, listening and speaking. IRCC publishes current minimums.
